Pediatric Otolaryngology

Introduction
Pediatric care in otolaryngology in the Dalhousie University division of Otolaryngology is undertaken at the Isaac Walton Killam Health Sciences Centre (IWK) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The IWK is a tertiary care pediatric center serving Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

The otolaryngology care team is involved in all aspects of pediatric otolaryngology care, including general pediatric otolaryngology, pediatric airway management and surgery, pediatric otology, pediatric head and neck surgery, and cochlear implantation. Excellent support is available with specialty trained pediatric anaesthesia, intensive care, and neonatology, as well as a full array of pediatric sub-specialists in medical and surgical fields.

The operating suite is well equipped for all aspects of pediatric ENT surgery, including pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery, pediatric airway endoscopy and surgery, laser surgery (with support from carbon dioxide and holmium lasers), and pediatric otology (including cochlear implantation).

The Clinic
The Ear, Nose and Throat clinic is located on the 1st floor of the IWK. The clinic allows space for five examining rooms and a room for otologic microscopy, and is fully equipped for flexible nasopharyngoscopy and nasal endoscopy.

Clinics include general pediatric otolaryngology clinics as well as specialty clinics in Complex Pediatric Hearing Loss and part of the multidisciplinary Cleft Palate Clinic.

The clinic is located in close proximity to the IWK site of the Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres, which provides complete audiological diagnostic testing and support for children in the Maritimes, including audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emission testing, auditory brainstem response testing and central auditory processing evaluation. Hearing aid evaluation and follow-up for children is also supported. The speech language pathology department provides full inpatient assessment and therapy for children with speech and swallowing disorders.
