Head & Neck Oncology Program

Overview

The care of patients with cancers of the head and neck is a major focus for our division. Evaluation and treatment recommendations come under the auspices of a well-organized Tumour Board which meets on a weekly basis. The tumour board is preceded by a forum for head and neck oncology inpatients, and it is followed by an outpatient oncology clinic.

Our approach is inter-disciplinary, and includes assessment by members of the Oto-HNS, Radiation Oncology, Nursing, Nutrition, Speech and Language Pathology, Social Work, and Prosthodontics services. A dedicated head & neck radiologist and pathologist add tremendously to the quality of the tumour board presentations. We also enjoy excellent working relationships with the thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and hematology/oncology services.

The Oncology Program is fully represented on the Head & Neck "Site Team," a Division of Cancer Care Nova Scotia. At present, the primary focus of the Site Team is to develop, standardize and refine provincial guidelines for treatment of patients with various head and neck cancers.
